This school is a multigrade with 1 school head and 3 teachers excluding Kindergarten teacher.
Brgy. Matam-is has a total population of 360 with 85 households. Active Barangay Council crafted a policy adopting the Baybay City ordinance through Barangay Resolution prohibiting the children/learners to enter the school premises during non-school days so that unnecessary actions that could make damages to the school can be avoided.
The economic status of most families is below average level specially those who migrated from other places, only few are having regular income. Majority of the families engage to farming, carpentry, laborers and driving (habal-habal) as their livelihood and source of income.
Matam-is Elementary School is one of the institutions which cater elementary education of Brgy. Matam-is, Baybay City, Leyte. The school is far from the city proper with 11 kilometers away. This can be reach through any other forms of transportation but most commonly use was motorcycle which is locally known “as habal-habal”. There are times in a year that tropical cyclone such as storm, tropical depression and typhoon hit the school and even the entire province. During heavy rainfall even without the danger of the latter calamity, flood will cause disturbance in and sometimes lead to cancellation of classes. Earthquake is also part of the equation in terms of the natural hazard that strikes the school.
Despite the school’s location, this serves as an evacuation center enough for victim families as their temporary shelter, for which the school have 3 classrooms from kindergarten to Grade Six. In order that the school can give its quality education to the students, textbooks and computer laboratory with computers, are made available and updated, renovated and repaired to sustain its purpose.
At present, the school has three (3) teachers excluding the kindergarten teacher which is also assigned in Mapgap Integrated School. All of them are effective and efficient teachers and are funded by the national government. Throughout its history, Matam-is Elementary School has been fortunate to have remarkable individuals who have shaped its character and success. The visionary school heads Mrs. Clara A. Basalo, Mrs. Angelita Catorce,Mrs, Helen G.Salas, Mrs. Corazon V. Abapo, Mrs. Gilda F. Escasinas, Mrs. Pamela D. Valmorida, Mr. Merson Porazo, Mrs. Elvira M. Kirong, Mrs. Gilda V. Impas have left an indelible mark on the school. Their unwavering commitment to student welfare, innovative teaching methods, and passion for education have been instrumental in shaping the lives of countless students.
