Maganhan National High School

History

Due to the resolute desire of the different barangay leaders in the nearby barangays; Can-Ipa, Igang, kantagnos, Maganhan and Villa Mag- aso, for the creation of Maganhan National High School, the City government of Baybay through its Sangguniang Panlungsod issued SP Resolution 2019-69-A, requesting the Honorable Carl Nicolas S. Cari, representative of the 5th district of Leyte for the “creation of Public National High School at barangay Maganhan, this city and SP Resolution No. 2019-70, “ Authorizing the Hon. City Mayor Jose Carlos L. Cari to allocate and disturse funds as financial assistance to the newly created Brgy. Maganhan National High School, this city. These legal papers formedpart of the documents submitted to the Deped Regional Office at Candahug, Palo, Leyte, for their appropriate action. The Deped Regional Office and in turn, issued Regional Memorandom No. 161, series 2020, entitled “Establishment of Maganhan National High School, Brgy. Maganhan, Baybay City Division.

Maganhan National High School is the only public high school in Baybay 1 District of Deped, Baybay City, Leyte. It started its operation last October 5, 2020. It really born in the of the pandemic, where life was hard because of the widespread effect of the Covid 19. In the school year 2020-2021, as a start, it offered only Grades 7 and 8 with an enrolment of 75 for Grade 7 32 for Grade 8, for a total of a07 as the pioneer students of Maganhan NHS. There were only five teachers namely, Madelyn P. Catubig, an English Teacher from Ciabu NHS, Brendo P. Gajes a Science Teacher from Baybay NHS, Joel I. Godoy, Science teacher from Kabungaan Ingtgrated School, Starlane L. Dayap, Mathematics teacher also from Kabungaan IS and Marie Joy M. Lastra, a MAPEH teacher from Mapgap IS. to the curriculum. The teacher were; Cresmenia D. Ibarra, Araling panlipunan teacher from Mapgap IS and Ama Ria L. Mones, TLE teacher from Kabungaan IS . The enrolment for Grade 9 was 40 and for Grade 70. The student population significantly increased from 107 in SY 2020-2021 to 180 in SY 2021-2022.
Since Maganhan NHS is a newly opened school then, it has no school buildings yet. That was why during the pandemic, the school principal, Mr. Peter Paul B. Jamero negotiated for the staff to use a classroom in Baybay City National High, courtesy of Mr. Joserico I. Valenzona who willingly welcomed the Maganhan NHS teachers in their school, in order to print modules for their learners and also it has no budget (MOOE) on its own yet. The teachers relied on donations from kindhearted individuals, the LGU (City and Barangay Maganhan) and the Deped Baybay City for supplies like bond papers printers, ink and other school needs.

In the school year 2021-2022, Baybay SDO ordered the staff to transfer to Maganhan Brgy. Hall from the Baybay City Night High School in order to be accessible to the learners, parents and community. For the school year 2022-2023, when face to face class instruction was implemented by Deped, the school utilized the two classrooms, borrowed from Maganhan Elementary School and divided the Maganhan Evacuation Center into to have four classrooms. Grade 7 and 9 occupied the two elementary school classrooms because of their bigger number while Grade 8 and 10 occupied the evacuation center.

However, because Grade9 learners reached 66 in all, it was divided into two sections. The other section occupied the vacant garage of the Barangay Captain, Hon. Renato P. Maganhan as its temporary classroom. Currently, the teachers increased increased in the number from seven to nine excluding the principal with the addition of Mrs. Rezell M. Dajao, a Filipino teacher from Ciabu NHS, Mr. Bobby James Dagatan, a MAPEH teacher from Plaridel NHS and Mrs. Ranie Manla, an Araling Panlipunan/ ESP teacher who replaced Mrs. Cresmenia D. Ibarra who resigned and went to Canada with her family.
The school head, Mr. Peter Paul B. Jamero, with the help of the barangay captain and the PTA are finding ways and means, so that the school will have its long-needed school building with hopefully six classrooms since the school enrolment is increasing yearly.

Besides, efforts are going on to request for a Senior high School in the coming year with HUMMS (Academic) as its initial offering. Hopefully, by the grace of the God Almighty, Maganhan NHS will continue to provide quality, accessible and relevant Basic Education to its learners so that they will be equipped with the 21st century skills and competencies for them to be ready to meet life’s challenges in the competitive world.
