PCPG Elementary School

History

Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Elementary School, previously known as Esquina Community School, is deeply rooted in the vibrant history of its locale. The name "Esquina" originates from the Spanish word meaning corner or crossing, reflecting its strategic location at the convergence of routes leading to Tacloban and Ormoc City to the south. Recognized in 1954, the school saw its humble beginnings as a
primary institution. In 1958, the school site was acquired through a purchase facilitated by the Barrio officials, using funds generously provided by the late President Carlos P. Garcia, channeled through the esteemed late municipal councilor, Hon. Jose R. Sievert Sr. The school's initial phase comprised a single section with fewer than 50 learners. The inaugural commencement exercises took place in the school year 1958- 1959, marking the commencement of a journey toward educational excellence. Over
the years, enrollment steadily climbed, and today, the institution proudly educates 580 learners across three sections per grade level.

The desire for a change of school name from Esquina Community School to President Carlos P. Garcia Elementary School was to perpetuate the memory of the school benefactor, the late President Carlos P. Garcia of the Republic of the Philippines. In 1985, after some long and arduous legal proceedings, Parliamentary Bill No. 4788 change the name of the school to Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Elementary School. The bill was introduced by then assemblymen Emiliano I. Melgazo, Alberto S. Veloso, Artemio Mate and Damian V. Albaba. The school's transformative journey is marked by a surge in enrollment,
paving the way for the construction of additional buildings and an expansion of the teaching staff. These pivotal changes have contributed to the institution's evolution into a cornerstone of education in the community.

Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Elementary School boasts a legacy of success, with many of its alumni achieving professional heights as teachers, engineers, attorneys, and more. The institution actively encourages participation in extracurricular activities such as scouting and sports, fostering a holistic approach to education. The school is deeply committed to community service, actively participating in tree planting, coastal clean-up, and waste segregation initiatives. By instilling a sense of environmental responsibility, the institution strives to create socially conscious and environmentally aware citizens. With success came challenges. The school faced congestion due to a significant increase in enrollees, prompting a need for additional infrastructure. Despite facing challenges, the institution persevered, with the realization of a covered court that serves as a versatile space for various school activities. Some classroom buildings underwent reconstruction and major repairs, ensuring a conducive learning environment for all.

Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Elementary School stands as a testament to the resilience, dedication, and community spirit that have shaped its history. Through the years, it has not only imparted knowledge but has also instilled values that resonate in the hearts of its students and alumni.
